Powering the Future Sustainably: Bracklone 110 kV Eco-Substation Progress

Project Spotlight: Bracklone 110 kV Substation

At H&MV Engineering, we take pride in delivering projects that not only meet today’s energy demands but also look ahead to future needs. This commitment is on full display at the Bracklone 110 kV Substation, where we were appointed as EPC contractor by ESB Engineering and Major Projects. Since commencing work in March 2023, the project has made impressive strides, despite the challenges of a confined site.

Key Progress to Date

Significant advancements have been made on the G.I.S (Gas Insulated Switchgear) building and transformer bunds, with major civil works now complete and structural installation well underway. The G.I.S building will house both 110 kV and 20 kV G.I.S switchgear, essential components for managing the flow of high-voltage electricity.

Externally, the substation will feature two 110 kV transformers and three 20 kV transformers, along with the necessary supporting equipment. Once operational, the Bracklone 110 kV Substation will be a critical piece of infrastructure for the region, significantly enhancing the electricity network’s capacity. This will ensure a reliable and secure power supply for Portarlington and its surrounding areas, laying the groundwork for future growth and development.

Building with Sustainability in Mind

In addition to providing essential infrastructure, H&MV Engineering is committed to sustainable construction practices. We recognise the importance of reducing our carbon footprint and integrating eco-friendly solutions into every phase of the project.

Some of the key sustainability measures being implemented include:

  • Rainwater Harvesting: Reducing water waste by capturing and reusing rainwater for site operations.
  • Upcycling of Waste: Materials like timber and concrete are being upcycled, minimising waste and promoting a circular economy.
  • Zero Waste to Landfill: Aiming for a 100% diversion of construction waste from landfills through recycling and responsible disposal.
  • Enhanced Planting & Biodiversity: After construction, we’ll integrate green spaces and enhanced biodiversity, promoting a healthier ecosystem in the area.

Looking Ahead

As we wrap up the civil and structural phases, we’re preparing to kick off the electrical installation works later this year. This next stage will bring us closer to delivering a high-quality substation that not only serves the energy needs of today but also supports a sustainable future for generations to come.

We’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our talented team of engineers, subcontractors, and partners for their tireless work on this project so far. Your dedication is helping us build a greener, more sustainable world.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Bracklone 110 kV Substation as we progress into the next exciting phase!
