Apprenticeship
H&MV Engineering offers diverse apprenticeship programmes across Ireland and the UK that combine classroom learning with on-the-job training. Our Electrical and Civil, Structural and Architectural (CSA) Apprenticeship programmes provide a structured pathway resulting in professional qualifications designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge to excel in engineering.
Graduate

Apprenticeship Programmes
Phase 1: Induction & Core Skills (Min. 12 weeks)
Phases 2 to 7 (Alternating Phases):
On-the-Job training at H&MV Engineering: Gain practical experience across a range of sites and sectors under the supervision of experienced professionals.
Off-the-Job Phases: Progressively build theoretical knowledge through periods spent in college.
How it Works
This comprehensive four-year programme combines classroom learning with on-the-job training, equipping you with the skills and knowledge to become a qualified Electrician.
Final Qualification
Upon successful completion, you will be awarded a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate and become a qualified Electrician.
Year 1
H&MV Studies: Introduction to H&MV Engineering, Onboarding & Foundation Skills, Health and Safety training, construction principles and essential civil engineering concepts.
College Studies (Full-time): Begin your civil engineering degree programme, focusing on core subjects such as mechanics, mathematics, surveying and computer-aided design
Year 2
H&MV Studies: Work based learning centred around the subjects been studied during the year and health and safety training.
College Studies: Continue with the core subjects and expand into Hydraulics, Civil Materials, Structurers and Environmental engineering.
Year 3
H&MV Studies: Work based learning with elements of project management, communication, presentation skills and completion of a project and presentation to senior management on the learnings of the apprenticeship programme.
College Studies: Studies continue and build on the previous subjects, expanding to include geotechnical and road engineering.
How it Works
This three-year programme is run in collaboration with ATU Sligo and offers a blend of classroom learning and practical experience. The apprentices attend online lectures one day a week, with an additional day each month spent on campus for labs and workshops. For the other 3-4 days per week, apprentices will work within our CSA team to gain practical experience by working on a wide range of CSA projects.
There are three semesters each year (Semester 1: September – December, Semester 2: January – May and Semester 3. June – August) with lectures taking place for the first 2 semesters. The apprentices may also be offered opportunities to travel across H&MV’s range of international projects during their apprenticeship.
Final Qualification
Level 7 Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering by Apprenticeship, equipping you for a successful career in the construction industry. ATU is also currently developing a Level 8 and Level 9 apprenticeship course, which H&MV would support apprentices through upon completion of Level 7.
Year 1
Onboarding & Core Skills Training: Introduction to H&MV Engineering, safety protocols, and foundational electrical knowledge.
College Studies (Part-time): Begin working towards a relevant electrical qualification (e.g., Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation).
Year 2 - 3
On-the-job Training: Gain practical experience in various electrical disciplines under the supervision of qualified professionals.
Continued College Studies: Complete your chosen electrical qualification, further developing your theoretical knowledge.

How it Works
This programme typically lasts three to four years and provides a structured pathway to becoming a qualified Electrician in the UK.
Final Qualification
Upon successful completion, you’ll achieve industry-recognised qualifications, such as the Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation (Building and Electrotechnical Services), preparing you for a successful career as an electrician in the UK.
Year 1
Onboarding & Core Skills Training: Introduction to H&MV Engineering, health & safety protocols, and foundational civil engineering concepts.
The programme will include learning both on-site and at university. Our English apprentices will be in college one day a week, with the rest of the time spent on site and our Scottish apprentices will be at university one day a month, with the rest of the time spent on site. Both pathways will allow for study time to complete University work.
Year 2 - 4
Rotational Work Placements: Gain experience in various civil engineering disciplines through rotations on H&MV Engineering projects.
College Studies: Continue your studies towards your Civil Engineering qualification, deepening your theoretical knowledge.
Year 4.5 (Graduate Development)
Consolidation & Project Focus: Apply your learned skills to real-world projects with increased responsibility. Potential secondment opportunities may be available to broaden your experience.

How it Works
This four-and-a-half-year programme combines practical training with university studies. Apprentices will have set KSB’s (Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours), they have to achieve throughout the programme which they will gain on site and through a rotation programme working with Civil Mentors both on site and in design aspect of Civil Engineering.
Final Qualification
These advanced apprentices start at level 4 in UK and will leave the programme with a degree in Civil Engineering, opening doors to exciting opportunities in the UK construction industry.
