Employee Spotlight: My Journey at H&MV
Hi, I’m Conor Fahey, an Electrical Estimator for MV Integration at H&MV. I’ve been with the company for over six years, and it’s been an incredible journey filled with learning, growth, and exciting opportunities.
From Apprentice to Estimator: My Career Journey
I started my career straight after secondary school, opting for an apprenticeship instead of traditional college. I had always been interested in the construction industry, working with carpenters during school breaks. Initially, I considered Quantity Surveying, but the apprenticeship route appealed to me more as it combined practical work with short college phases.
My first major project was in Darndale, where I spent two years working on H&MV’s first G.I.S Substation. Later, I had the chance to work in Norway, which was an amazing and eye-opening experience. As I progressed through my apprenticeship, I started exploring other opportunities within H&MV, leading me to transition into estimation. Now, I’m proud to be the sole estimator for MV Integration projects in Ireland. My hands-on site experience has been invaluable in this role, helping me better understand project requirements and cost estimation.
Professional Achievements & Growth
I’ve had the chance to work on some great projects and achieve significant milestones, including:
- Successfully securing a project with Abbvie Sligo
- Achieving significant project wins for MV Integration last year
- Gaining expertise in SLDs and electrical specifications for pricing
My background in on-site work gives me a practical mindset, allowing me to accurately assess labour requirements and communicate effectively with clients and manufacturers.
A Day in My Life as an Electrical Estimator
- Every day brings new challenges, but my core responsibilities include:
- Preparing detailed project proposals, covering labour, management, and ancillary costs
- Receiving client specifications and liaising with manufacturers for budget costs
- Organising site visits to assess feasibility and challenges
- Working closely with Project Managers, Commissioners, and Procurement teams to create accurate quotations

- Assigning Project Managers to new projects once we receive approvals
Having a problem-solving approach and strong communication skills is essential in ensuring each project runs smoothly from estimation to execution.
Beyond Work: Who I Am Outside the Office
Outside of work, I’m always on the move. I love staying active and playing sports, including:

🏌️♂️ Golf
🏃 Running
🎮 PlayStation (when I get the time!)
I’m not much of a TV person, but I enjoy keeping busy with sports and other activities.
Teamwork & Company Culture at H&MV
One of the best things about working at H&MV is the collaborative environment. Many different departments play a role in my estimation process, and I rely on the expertise of Project Managers, Commissioners, and Procurement teams to get the most accurate information.
And of course, the Christmas break-up day at the Hurlers is always a highlight!
Words of Advice & Inspiration
I believe in always staying curious and proactive in this industry. My advice to anyone looking to grow in this field:
💡 Always ask questions and seek knowledge
💡 Keep an eye on emerging industry trends like wind farms, solar, and BESS
💡 Opportunities abroad are constantly evolving—stay open to new experiences!
Right now, I’m working towards a Level 6 course at ATU Sligo, which will be a stepping stone to further studies in Quantity Surveying. I’m really happy in my current role, but I always keep my options open for future growth.
Final Thoughts
Looking back, my journey with H&MV has been an exciting one. From starting as an apprentice to leading estimations for MV Integration projects, I’ve learned so much and continue to grow every day. I’m grateful for the opportunities and support I’ve received along the way.
